Receiving Antidoron

After the Benediction (a prayer recited before the Icon of Christ) the priest makes the Dismissal The congregation sits down, and the Parish Councilmen pass the church trays. It is at this point that the priest makes the necessary announcements. These are followed by the sermons. After these he usually bids everyone "Kalimera" - Have a good day. He then proceeds to distribute to everyone small pieces of blessed bread, called antidoron, which means "In place of the Gifts" (i.e.., Holy Communion). This small particle of bread serves as a reminder - - to those who did not receive Holy Communion - - that they should quickly prepare themselves to receive the Holy Gifts (Holy Communion). When we receive our portion of antidoron we kiss the hand of the priest, as an act of respect and gratitude for the spiritual nourishment which he has given us this day.

We then leave the church quietly, thanking and praising God for all His benefits.

"I was glad when they said to me, let us go to the house of the Lord." (Psalm 122: 1)
