DECEMBER 24
FEAST DAY OF SAINT EUGENIA
|
Eugenia followed her father, a Roman Prefect (administrator), to Alexandria where he was sent to serve. During her stay there she was converted to Christianity and baptized. She abandoned her household and entered a monastery, where she devoted herself to her faith.
She longed to be a monk, but only men were allowed to be monks. Her desire and sincerity was so outstanding, she was permitted an isolated cell in the monastery where she could pursue her meditation, prayers and studies for several years. Finally, she was tonsured a monk and it was discovered that she had superior powers of healing.
She was successful In converting her father, brothers and sisters to the Christian religion. Her father, a pagan Duke, became a churchman and rose to the position of Archbishop of Alexandria!
Saint Eugenia suffered martyrdom in Rome for her dedication to the faith. |
