DECEMBER 12
- FEAST DAY OF
- SAINT SPYRIDON
|
Saint Spyridon had no formal education and could not read. Yet, he had memorized the entire Bible by listening to it being read in Church and in his home.
He preached the Gospel of Christianity and was persecuted by the Roman pagans for refusing to deny his Faith. He was beaten by the Roman soldiers so severely that he lost his right eye as a result and was sentenced to work in dark, dank mines for many years. Although he died so long ago, his body is still well preserved on the island of Corfu (Kerkira) and pilgrims venerate his holy remains on his Feast Day each year, when the clergy carry his holy body through the streets of Corfu. |
