FEBRUARY 17
- FEAST DAY OF
- ST. THEODORE
|
Theodore was only 23 years old when he
became a Christian while serving In the Army; He loved
Jesus and attended Divine Liturgy every morning before leaving for his round of duties.
Theodore stood 6 feet tall and was one of the strongest and bravest men in his legion. When the Emperor learned that many officers and men of his Army were of the Christian faith, he issued an order to all the soldiers to deny the Christian Faith and offer sacrifices to the pagan gods/ Theodore refused to conform to, this edict and was therefore sentenced to be executed. While awaiting his death by fire, Theodore passed the time away by singing Christian hymns which he had composed and which are still sung in our Church services.
Theodore was thrown into the flames. His remains are venerated in a little chapel in the province of Pontus, Turkey. (Also celebrated on this day is Theodora).
