VASILIKO (SWEET BASIL)
|
| The Orthodox Church's official flower is VASILIKO. Custom and tradition has it that.... the basil flower became special to the Church over 1600 years ago, St. Helen, the mother of the Emperor Constantine journeyed to the Holy Land in search of the true Cross of Jesus Christ. After many weeks of searching, a beautiful flower was found growing in an area, which was both lonely and abandoned. St. Helen ordered her soldiers to dig deep into the earth at the exact spot where the plant was growing. It was there that they found the three crosses upon which Jesus and the two thieves were crucified. VASILIKO became the official flower of Orthodoxy and is used in many major Feast Days of the Church to this day. |
