American Reunion 2012 Unrated 720p Brrip Subtitles 13
‘american reunion’ is a great movie, but it’s a great movie to be alone with. there’s nothing wrong with a sequel that goes back to the well when it’s time to do so, but there’s also nothing wrong with making a movie that doesn’t have to go back to the well in the first place. i’d love to be able to enjoy this movie in the future, just as i’ve enjoyed american pie since the first time i saw it, but i’m afraid this one’ll stay in the past forever.
i’m not sure what it is about me, but i have a natural bias towards sequels and prequels, which typically aren’t my favorite films. this is not the case for ‘american reunion,’ which is one of the most entertaining films i have seen in a while. the humor is unrelenting, and the characters are not only likable, but extremely fun. the chemistry between the leads is evident from the first scene and they feel like real friends you’d want to hang out with, even though you’d never actually see them on a day-to-day basis.
‘american reunion’ is a rare sequel that not only is an entertaining romp for fans, but it’s a pleasant surprise for people who may have never seen the original film or even the first film. with that said, while ‘american pie 2’ is a guilty pleasure, it is not exactly something that will make me want to watch it over and over again, though i would certainly recommend it to anyone who hasn’t seen it before. this sequel is a guilty pleasure, a guilty pleasure nonetheless, which is something that couldn’t be said for the earlier film. with that said, the reason that the film works so well is that it doesn’t try to be anything more than what it is. it’s a raunchy comedy, and it’s amazing how much more fun it is to watch when one is well past the teenage years. that is what this film succeeds in delivering, and it does so with stellar comedic performances and plenty of laughs.
the most obvious problem with the sequel, ironically enough, was the biggest weakness of the original film: the four friends are not terribly deep characters. seldom do you see them even attempt to be deep, though, which is especially surprising coming from the same group responsible for films such as can’t hardly wait, reality bites, and the bonfire of the vanities. perhaps it’s not too much of a shock to discover that the friends are pretty shallow, but the film actually uses this to its advantage: there’s a slight problem with the plot, but instead of worrying about the relationship between the friends, director and writer paul weitz focuses on the trauma of making a big time commitment to someone you know you’re going to dump the following year. the ensuing character drama is deep, and honestly, it’s exactly the type of story that should have been the focus of the film: relationships are a recurring theme throughout ‘american pie’, and it does it so well. this leads us to the other problem with the film, and that’s the fact that the theme is barely explored, with both the romantic and the amorous aspects of the relationship being glossed over and forgotten. it was a big deal in the original, and now it’s a tiny one in this movie; which is sort of like throwing away the ball of a game just because you’re down a few runs late in the fourth inning.
fair warning: in addition to including the american pie sequel in its entirety, american reunion offers a hefty dose of raunchy humor (though it’s nowhere near as fulsome as it was in the first movie). the humorous bits are not just crude or harmless but, in fact, quite tasteful. it’s also a bit overloaded with this sort of humor, and it doesn’t come at a particularly satisfying pace.
