the convicts did not seem to worry about being jailed for a crime they were not guilty of, or their loss of freedom or even being sent to an institution like yerawada central jail in pune, where they were tortured during interrogation. they were just happy to be given a chance to show off their acting skills. that was when bhattacharya conceived the idea of staging a play called tasher desh, also known as the land of cards, in the jail. he asked prabhat banerjee, who had also been a voluntary worker, to draft a script. they went to the convicts and had a frank conversation. ‘some of the convicts were curious about the idea of staging a play in a prison. but all of them were very curious about playing a role, for they had never acted before. in the end, none of them turned down the offer,’ said banerjee.
as the convicts were released, they took their acting skills with them, and the play is a testament to that. but it was the jail authorities who ran a course in theatre therapy in prisons. the experiment was a success and it led to the introduction of theatre therapy in prisons in india. in fact, this was how bhattacharya was introduced to theatre therapy. the convicts gave him a lot of credit for the experiment. one of them thanked bhattacharya for inspiring him to change the way he looked at life. and, the convicts were released into society as free and happy human beings. their lives have been transformed and they have given the prison experience a new perspective. they have become better human beings. bhattacharya was given an award by the ramon magsaysay award for peace and international understanding. in 2005, tasher desh was staged by a group of inmates in yerawada central jail, pune, when the convicts staged a play for three days and nights in front of a live audience. the convicts performed the roles of different characters in the play. the jail authorities were impressed and even approved a similar play the following year.
in tasher desh, he saw the need to make full use of the sexual potential of his audience and he was able to make them realize this potential. although the story of tasher desh is the story of a man who is almost pathologically in love with his wife, the audience is made to appreciate his love for his wife by asking them to sympathize with the man’s state of near-perversion.
the other central theme is the prisoners confront their own demons. the convict das has been in prison since the age of 14. the character, a young man in his early twenties, represents the’school of the world’ (he’s the only one who has never spent any time in prison). but he has inherited some of the dark forces of the world. he looks deeply into the mirror, and he has seen and been through the hell of prison. and that has given him the strength to resist the pressure to return to prison – and to understand the need to escape and to fight for freedom. das is a strong advocate of freedom, and he’s a good friend to other prisoners who are also against imprisonment.
the other character, sangeet is a prison inmate who’s a singer and composer. the convicts spend a lot of time listening to his songs. sangeet is a talented musician and draws inspiration from the great indian music tradition. his music is very indian and very contemporary. but he is not free of prison and he too has his demons. he also has a history of childhood love and a desire for freedom. the only difficulty for him is that he is not as talented as das. he can’t compare to das. and das takes advantage of that. das tries to manipulate sangeet, and he uses him to help him convince other inmates that das is the more talented one. the audience is constantly watching them fight for their credibility and for the attention of the other inmates.
